We are pleased to share a new article by Phd Candidate Sarah Edgcumbe, produced for Researching Internal Displacement’s Middle East Research Network on Internal Displacement (MERNID). The piece explores the challenges and complexities faced by returnee Iraqi Gypsies and Bedouin, emphasizing the urgent need for consultation with these communities on their protection and (re)integration needs.
Drawing on research from 2021, Sarah’s ongoing doctoral studies, and recent work with STOOS Consulting, the article highlights:
- The marginalization of returnee Gypsies and Bedouin in Mosul and Nineveh by government and nexus actors.
- The additional societal exclusion faced by Gypsies.
- The impact of community tensions and climate change on reintegration and sustainable livelihoods.
