The Centre for Minorities Research (CMR) is an interdisciplinary research centre at the University of St Andrews. We study how class, race and ethnicity, gender, generation, nationality, religion, and sexuality intersect to shape minority experiences. We also work with communities, institutions and the wider public to share what we learn.
Our applied research focuses on:
- the political and social struggles of minority groups
- the economic and labour-market effects of increasing diversity
- the governance and management of minorities
What we do
Podcast: A student-led series, in which students from across the University talk with leading figures in academia, civil society and activism about minority issues.
Seminar Series: Regular talks bringing new research on minorities to staff, students and the public.
Projects: Collaborative research with communities and partners in Scotland, Brazil and across Europe on education, belonging, migration and memory.
Blog and Publications: Writing and research outputs from across our network.
Our history and people
CMR was founded by Professor Stavroula Pipyrou. Today it brings together more than 30 directors, advisory board members, associates and visiting scholars. They come from disciplines across the social sciences, humanities, law, medicine and biology.
