At the recent Mind & Matter: A Day of Discovery and Inspiration for Curious Minds, CMR was proudly represented by PhD students Rory Cassie, Connor Eckersall, and Yichi Zhang. They presented a thought-provoking poster titled “Modern Minorities”.
The Modern Minorities project is a collaborative effort that highlights the ongoing research of CMR’s talented PhD students and faculty. The poster features the following contributions:
- Yichi Zhang – Stories of the Chinese Diaspora in Jamaica: Yichi explores the rich history and experiences of the Chinese diaspora in Jamaica, shedding light on their contributions to the cultural fabric of the island.
- Rory Cassie – Being Sámi in Norway Today: Rory’s work examines the contemporary experiences of the Sámi people in Norway, focusing on issues of identity, culture, and self-determination in the modern world.
- Connor Eckersall – Where Does Gaelic Belong in Scotland?: Connor investigates the place of the Gaelic language in Scotland today, considering its role in cultural preservation, education, and the future of Scottish identity.
- Stavroula Pipyrou – The Greek Linguistic Minority in Calabria, South Italy – the Grecanici: CMR’s founding director, Stavroula Pipyrou, explores the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Grecanici, the Greek-speaking minority in Calabria, southern Italy.
The event provided a valuable platform for engaging with curious minds and exchanging ideas on the complex and diverse narratives of minority communities worldwide. It was an inspiring day of learning and discovery.
